DOUGLAS ROYAL is the oldest and one of the most successful teams in Manx women?s football. Formed in 1999 by ex-DHSOB player Brian Carney, they featured in a series of friendlies before playing their first competitive match with the introduction of the women?s football competition in the 1999/00 season.
Their first ever competitive match was on Friday 28 February 2000 in the Flood-lit Cup competition, defeating Laxey 3-0 at the NSC with Donna Shimmin credited to score the first ever competitive goal in Manx womens football but also the first ever hat-trick. They went onto win the competition, defeating Rushen Utd 2-1 on penalties after 1-1 in extra-time, Sarah McAdam scoring Royal?s goal in the final.
The same season, Douglas Royal also won the league and became the first team to complete a league and cup double, going through the entire season with a 100% record.
The following campaign, they retained the league but lost in the semis of the Flood-lit Cup to Rushen Utd, 2-1 thus ending a 21 match unbeaten and 100% run.
The 2001/02 season saw the Whites win the inaugural Charity Shield, defeating Malew 2-0 courtesy of a Jo Hicks? effort and an own goal. But Douglas Royal had to wait until 2003/04 campaign before silverware made its way back to Noble?s Park again by completing a cup double. They won the Flood-lit Cup for the second time, defeating Peel 1-0 Siobhan Lockwood scoring the only goal in the game and Union Mills 5-1 in the FA Cup final, Bekki Cole (2), Sarah Breen, Siobhan Lockwood and Karen Faragher finding the net.
In the 2005/06 season, they reached two cup finals again. In the Flood-lit Cup they lost 1-0 to Malew, despite Kym Hicklin having a legitimate goal ruled out. But the two teams met again in the FA Cup final and gained revenge, winning 3-2, Kym Hicklin scoring twice and Bekki Cole.
Season (2006/07) saw Royal become the first team to retain the FA Cup defeating Rushen Utd 2-0 in the final, Ceri Purvis bagging a brace.
Season (2007/08) saw Douglas Royal complete the double (league and FA Cup). However lost in the Flood-lit Cup final to Corinthians 2-1, Donna Shimmin on target for the Royal.
THE SEASON (2008/09). Douglas Royal won all 3 major trophies this season. The only women's team to complete the treble.
